Being a mom is a full-time job, and let’s be honest—it can feel like a never-ending marathon. From the alarm clock ringing in the morning to the last bedtime story, your day is packed with endless tasks - you are the ultimate multitasker, juggling numerous roles - caregiver, chef, nurse, therapist, chauffeur, financier, referee between siblings - the list goes on! It’s no wonder so many moms lose track of their own needs. But taking time for yourself is a must!
You are the superhero who holds everything together - always doing whatever it takes to make everything work - so let's take a moment to appreciate all the incredible work you do every single day and then let's begin celebrating some independence. Grab a snack, a cup of tea or coffee, and get cozy as we dive into some ideas and ways to help you gain that much deserved, independent "me-time." Let's start with small breaks to reconnect with yourself . . .
Enjoy Simple Pleasures
Pick up that book you’ve been meaning to read or watch that movie you set aside for “later.” I finally read Dracula after years of sitting on my shelf and it was MAGNIFICENT! A great way to time travel and gain some insight on storytelling and some history. Immersing yourself in something that distracts you from laundry and carpooling is a great way to keep your thoughts fresh, like listening to an old favorite album or playlist. It can spark joy, even causing you to sing along, out loud! It's a great pick-me-up and keeps those vocals in check for all that screamin we do at times as moms! LOL.
Dance Like Nobody's Watching
Dance! Yes, Dance! Turn up the radio or that favorite playlist from enjoying simple pleasures, kick off your shoes and let loose in your living room, or where ever you have floorspace! You can even sing along! Dancing not only brings joy but is also known to reduce stress. Research always shows that physical activity can enhance mood and energy levels. So, turn up the music and celebrate your independence, Mama-style, even if you only have time for one song!
Nature Retreat
Planning a day out at the park or beach can do wonders for your well-being. Taking the time to BREATHE and inhale nature is exhilerating and rejuvenating. There is nothing more calming and peaceful than sitting or walking by the seaside, letting the water run over your feet and listening to the lull of the waves and the squawk of the birds. Sitting by, or walking by trees at the park offers the same delicious pleasure. If time is limited, go for a scenic drive. The beauty of nature truly does provide a refreshing escape, elevating your mood and helping to improve mental health.
Treat Yourself Specially
When was the last time you bought something just for you? It could be a stunning dress, a pair of new jeans, shoes, or even a new skincare product you’ve been eyeing. Treating yourself helps remind you of your worth. It’s not selfish—it’s necessary. A new pair of earrings, a new robe, a new bathing suit can boost your mood and confidence, allowing you to feel refreshed and worth it. Investing in yourself, even in small ways, sends a message that you matter.
Create Your Sanctuary
Find a space at home and claim it. Transform it into your own personal sanctuary. Whether it’s a comfy chair by the window, a spare room, small space in the corner of your living room, or a cozy corner in your garden, claim that spot! Use it for creative pursuits like drawing, journaling, or even starting that book you always dreamed of writing. Creativity can be a strong form of self-care, allowing you to express yourself outside of motherhood!
Pamper Yourself
Indulge in a long, hot bath with your favorite bubble bath or soothing oils. Light candles and play calming music. Pampering doesn’t have to be elaborate; it simply requires intention. Taking time to relax in this way can improve your overall well-being, and you are worth that time.
Connect with Friends
Meeting friends for coffee or lunch can be revitalizing. Whether in person or virtually, sharing laughs and stories can lighten your load. Connecting with other moms can provide comfort and insight into your experiences and maybe even offer support if you are a single mom. You may find that others are also seeking that precious, guilt-free time for themselves and a network of support.
A Quick Note on Guilt-Free Time
It's important to acknowledge this: guilt-free time for yourself is ESSENTIAL for your mental health. Everyone deserves a break from the chaos, and that includes you. Whether it’s a short getaway or simply stepping away in a corner you have designated as yours during a busy day, remember that these moments replenish your spirit, equipping you to be even more present for your family. Happy moms raise happy kids, and caring for yourself plays a crucial part in that equation.
So, this holiday, let’s celebrate independence, honor the hard work of motherhood, and relish the joy of taking time for you. Now, go enjoy that freedom!
