I Am Bound Nowhere
“I think about death a lot.” I told Sarah. Maybe this is dark, but “sometimes I become hyperaware of our mortality. One day I will no longer live in this world, so I am so grateful whenever I get to see one more thing before I go.” I do not mean this in a morbid way. It is more matter-of-fact with a touch of poetry. Sarah and I spent our last fifteen minutes in Budapest reflecting in front of the Parliament building while I sipped my lactose-free latte. We were waiting for

Summer Song…
There’s sand in my sandwich, Sand on my head, Sand wedged in places Best left unsaid. Only the beach Could pull off such a caper: I came smooth as silk And went home as sandpaper!

Nesting
The Wonderings of Kate The last few months have been full of nests. I didn’t realize for several weeks that one of my Boston ferns had been a home for a mother wren. By the time I found the nest, it had been well used and then abandoned, as evidenced by the egg shell particles that lined the tiny dwelling. The next nest I found was on the ground, perfectly intact and rather new looking, made of strong twigs and dried grass. I wondered how it fell out of the tree. Was it

The Mothers Pond
When the story of the Orlando shootings hit the news, I couldn’t wrap my head around it. It was a full day before I could even begin to look at the coverage. Each word was like a blow. The son texting “mommy I am going to die” and the anguish in the eyes and voices of the survivors and those searching frantically for news, any news, of their friends and loved ones. It was the faces of the victims, as their images began to emerge on social media, that made my chest cave in

Finding Freedom
Fireworks crack outside our window. “Aren’t they done yet? Don’t they realize people have kids in these homes?” Another loud boom. “That’s it! If they wake the kids up with their nonsense I am dropping off the screaming children with them. They can deal with it!” We live in a beautiful southern suburb with a penchant for holiday celebrations. But something about July Fourth has always irked me since I became a mom. And it’s not just the blasting “fun” taking place outside my

Summer is Here!
The summer is here!!!! Which means kids will be home!!! Aye aye aye! So, let's have some fun... right in your own backyard. I'm thinking a small kiddie pool complete with rubber duckies to cool off, a few lounge chairs in the yard, plenty of sunblock and lots of duct tape for helping to close big mouths! LOL... kidding, of course! Blender for fruit shakes, like bananas, mangos, berries and oranges... YUM!!!! And lots of fresh iced-tea. Be sure to keep the ice trays full! You
